Fause comes from his job as Attorney General in Troms and Finnmark.
With his background, Fause is considered very well qualified for the role of new governor. The Governor is the Government’s chief representative on Svalbard and central in the implementation of Svalbard policy, the exercise of authority and the management of the archipelago. Fause has good insight into both the Governor’s tasks, the local communities on Svalbard and Svalbard policy, and has a good foundation for being able to develop the agency further, says Minister of Justice and Emergency Management Monica Mæland.
Lars Fause was assistant governor of Svalbard in the period 2008 to 2010.
– It has been an old dream. Since I went down ten years ago, I have been thinking about this almost every day. It therefore feels very good to have got the job, says Fause to NRK.
As a governor, you are both chief of police and state administrator.
– So it is a large and demanding task that the government expects to be carried out in the best way. Big and difficult assignments have always triggered me, he says.
Fineed for wet shots
In 2009, he was fined 5,000 kroner after a wet shot. The background was that he fired a shot with a rifle inside his own apartment in Longyearbyen on Svalbard. Fause told NRK that he kept on preparing to shoot up to the big game test when the accident happened.
– It was a serious mistake and a terribly boring accident, Fause told NRK after the incident.
From 1 July, the name of the position will change from governor to governor. He thus becomes the very first business master.
There were several strong applicants for the position of new governor. Among the applicants were judge Jørn Holme and judges Rune Bård Hansen, Cecilie Østensen Berglund and Inger-Marie Landfald.
