LaRiva: The Dangers of Being Overweight and How to Lose Weight

We talk to Renate about the dangers of being overweight and the need to lose weight. Because according to Renate, it is not about whether being fat is beautiful or not, but about health. In fact, she is sounding the alarm: “Far, far too many people are overweight!”

What is actually the danger of being fat?

“In short: Being overweight is unhealthy. Being overweight can make you sick. In fact, being overweight makes you sick. Diabetes can develop very quickly. Due to excess weight, the pancreas is no longer able to produce enough insulin. As a result, you may ultimately have to deal with very unpleasant consequences. But being overweight also leads to cardiovascular disease, an increased risk of cancer, joint complaints and sleep and breathing problems.”

What makes you overweight?

“I’m asked that very often; How is it possible that I am too fat? I don’t eat that much. It’s quite simple: you get overweight because the ratio of food and exercise is not in balance. Eating often and too much and not exercising enough. Everything that is not consumed is stored by the body as fat. That dates back to prehistoric times. The body protects us against periods of less abundance, such as during a famine.”

So eat less or differently?

“Yes, often. We always check with people what they are used to eating. That is the pattern and we will continue with it. People have eating patterns all their lives. Changing that pattern does produce results in the beginning, but over time people go back to the old pattern. So to lose weight permanently, we need to look at what is feasible and how they can maintain it. We teach them about the choices available, about how nutrition works and how healthy eating can be integrated into their lives.”

And move?

“Movement in necessity. We should consider exercise as normal as brushing our teeth. Exercise keeps us fitter and healthier and makes losing weight easier. At LaRiva we schedule appointments. This makes it easier to go. It becomes a habit. This way, exercise is not postponed or forgotten.”

Lose weight, live longer?

“A healthier life, yes! A healthy weight means your body wears out less quickly and you stay fitter. You will enjoy that for the rest of your life,” says Renate Feenstra.
