Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke Comments on Game Subscription Services and Baldur’s Gate 3 Availability

Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke says in a thread on X that the studio’s games will not appear on any game subscription services. That means the wildly popular Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t coming to Game Pass or any other subscription in the first place.

Swen Vincke wrote the post as part of a thread where he comments on a controversial statement by Ubisoft’s CEO Philippe Tremblay that in a interview with Gamesindustry.biz among other things said that players need to learn to be comfortable with not owning their games.

The problem with subscription services, as Swen Vincke sees it, is that it gives the owners of the service all the power over which games go from idea to finished games. He writes that while he understands the developers who take a chance when a subscription service pays, he wants to make sure that the other ecosystem – that is, a studio develops a game and then sells it directly to individual players – is not lost because it is valuable.

– Getting a board to approve a project driven by idealism is almost impossible and idealism needs room to exist, even if it can lead to disaster […] the subscription model will always be cost-benefit analyzes with the aim of maximizing profit. In such a world, it is always the subscription service that determines which games are made. Trust me – you really don’t want to.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in August 2023 and has so far been on sale exactly once: During Christmas and New Year when customers could pick up the multiple Game of the Year winner at a 10 percent discount.
