Add-ons for hit games are common practice. But Larian is no ordinary studio. The level 12 out of 20 limit in D&D seems to indicate that a sequel is coming out.
But Larian founder Sven Vincke says the studio is not working on a DLC and it’s unlikely, though not impossible.
“Honestly, we haven’t started work on the expansion.”
Vincke said that it would be difficult to make, as players are rewarded with divine powers at high levels. For example, some of the top level spells in D&D include things like astral projection, which allows you to move around the astral plane; foresight, which allows you to literally see the future and gain an advantage when throwing.
“Level 12-20 adventures require a different approach in terms of the antagonists to deal with and require a lot of development to get right. In terms of development costs, this will be much more than an add-on. As a result, many adventures in D&D are below level 12. Sounds easy until you start thinking about it and it turns out it’s not that easy.”
There’s another factor that makes it difficult to build a Baldur’s Gate 3 expansion from level 13: all possible variations of the completed Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign that fit into the starting point. If Larian were going to create something like this, it would be a long wait.
Vincke didn’t go into details about plans for modding tools, but said that mod support will improve significantly once the PS5 version is released.
