Poltava volunteers rescued a large colony of Red Book bats, which flayers threw into the cold from the 8th floor.
On January 10, about 1,600 Red-listed noctule bats were found in the snow in the courtyard of an apartment building in Poltava. Unknown flayers threw them from the 8th floor.
About the incident told Ukrainian bat rehabilitation center, which was involved in their rescue.
The owners of one of the apartments discovered a large colony of red noctules in hibernation under the lining of their balcony. Instead of turning to special services or volunteers, they threw the animals away, dooming them to certain death.
“When a bat is hibernating, it does not move because all vital processes (body temperature, breathing, heartbeat) are slowed down to save energy. Therefore, it is difficult to distinguish the living from the dead“, experts said.
When volunteers learned about what had happened and arrived at the site, unfortunately, more than a third of the colony was dead. The surviving bats were urgently sent to a rehabilitation center in Kharkov.
Among the rescued animals, many were injured, including broken wings and hind limbs. They are trying to get out. Although the chances are most likely small. Most probably won’t survive this winter.
Those nocturnal birds who miraculously were not injured were sent to a special center for the winter.
“This is the largest colony of bats we have ever rescued.“, noted the Center.
