Named Vasuki indicus, this giant is estimated to have a body length of up to 15 meters (more than 49 feet), rivaling Titanoboa which is known as the world’s largest snake.
Vasuki indicus is a member of the extinct Madtsoiidae family. This snake lived on the Indian subcontinent about 47 million years ago, during the Middle Eocene. The fossil was found in a coal mine in Gujarat, western India.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee analyzed 27 well-preserved vertebrae of the snake, which allowed them to estimate its incredible length. Vasuki indicus was much larger than any modern snake, with the largest living snake reaching a length of 7.67 meters.
Its large size suggests that Vasuki indicus was a slow-moving predator, similar to modern anacondas and swamp pythons. Its potential prey was different, similar to modern pythons.
The discovery of Vasuki indicus provides new insight into the diversity and size of prehistoric snakes. This suggests that ecosystems in the past were capable of supporting such large animals, and encourages further research into the evolution and ecology of snakes.
The news about the giant snakes Nabau and Tangkalaluk in Kalimantan is not just a fairy tale. For the Dayak tribe in the interior, the giant snake is the protector of Kalimantan’s forests and must be respected.
As reported by The Telegraf, the snake is said to have a size of up to 80 – 100 meters. The head is like a dragon, equipped with seven nostrils. The lore of these legendary snakes has a mystical nuance. In fact, in 2009 a photo of Nabau’s alleged appearance stole the attention of the foreign media.
If you look at its physical appearance, it is clear that this snake has a large size compared to similar reptiles. Cited from Johan Michael Median Pasha’s Facebook status, he wrote that the snake could be said to be one of the Indonesian Anacondas.
Yes, the big snake that belongs to Kalimantan is called Tangkalaluk in the local language, or the python king who is one of the rulers of the dense jungles of Borneo.
