The largest podcast publisher in the Netherlands, Dag en Nacht Media, has been taken over by the Danish podcast service Podimo. Both media companies announced this tonight. The Danes want to launch a podcast subscription soon.

How much Podimo pays for Day and Night Media is not disclosed. Dag en Nacht Media was founded in 2015 by childhood friends Tim de Gier and Anne Janssens. Since then, the podcast publisher has grown into the largest in our country. Mr. Big, The Red Lantern, Young Investing, All History Ever, murder cast on The University of the Netherlands are among the well-known podcasts of Day and Night Media. 8 million episodes are listened to every month.

Now founders De Gier and Janssens have sold their shares, as has V-Ventures, the sole investor in the company. According to CEO De Gier, who was previously an editor at Free Netherlands and book editor for NRC Handelsblad Day and Night Media has more opportunities for further growth under the wings of Podimo.

In a short period of time, the Danish media company has grown into the largest podcast maker in Europe with its large amount of ad-free podcasts and audiobooks. In addition to its own home country, Podimo is active in countries such as Germany, Spain and Norway.

“The podcast market has grown incredibly fast in recent years,” says De Gier. “Thanks to the partnership with Podimo, we can now further increase the volume and quality of our podcasts. There are still many stories that we would like to tell, but for which we did not have the resources until now.”

One of the new owner’s first acts is the introduction of a podcast subscription via its own Podimo app. For $5 a month, listeners can listen to countless podcasts and listen-talk shows on crime, parenting and relationships, self-development, and history.

Podimo was advised on the takeover by former Blendle boss Alexander Klöpping. Richard Musch, who previously worked for Netflix, will become country manager for the Netherlands on behalf of Podimo. “The launch of Podimo marks an important moment for the Dutch podcast market,” he says. “It is important for the industry to mature that podcasters are not dependent on advertisers.”

In April, the new owner will announce more details about the new podcast subscription and what content Dutch listeners can expect.
