Largest LGBTI-bar Peru becomes supermarket during corona crisis

Popular with the LGBTI community, ValeTodo Downtown in the Peruvian capital, Lima, will offer customers household and food products in the coming period. In the South American country, night clubs have to remain closed for the time being.

No layoffs

The solution has been devised so that the owner of the club does not have to fire staff. “If we had just stayed a nightclub, we wouldn’t have a dot on the horizon now,” she says. “Then we wouldn’t have been able to work.”

The club has been renamed Downtown Market for the occasion. The name change was celebrated with an opening ceremony. A DJ now plays music for customers who visit the ‘supermarket’.

New Opportunity

Staff who normally earn their money dancing or behind the bar are now behind the counter or filling the shelves in the store. “This is a new possibility,” said one of the drag queens who usually perform in the club. “I was very depressed at first, but you sometimes have to adapt to new challenges.”

In Peru, 282,364 infections with the coronavirus have been identified. There are 9504 deaths in the country. Only in Brazil is the virus outbreak worse in South America.
