“It is also worrying that the pressure on healthcare remains high,” says Aura Timen of the RIVM. In addition, she fears that the high number of infections will translate into new hospital admissions.
The fact that primary schools are open means more infections anyway, says Timen. “Because there you see outbreaks and then children transmit the virus to the rest of the family.”
The number of hospital admissions also rose, but less sharply: 1234 people were admitted to hospital in the past week, compared to 1214 a week earlier. The number of admissions to intensive care was slightly lower: 268 compared to 278.
Spread of virus is increasing
The spread of the virus continues to increase: the so-called infection number R was more than two weeks ago with 1.06 above 1, which means that 100 people together infect 106 others. Only if the number stays below 1 will the spread of the virus decrease.
