Largest flower (111 centimeters) spotted

A huge flower has been spotted on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It’s about the species Rafflesia arnoldii, that is known to be able to reach a diameter of one meter.

The specimen flowers in a nature reserve on the west of the island and has a diameter of 111 centimeters, says the head of the reserve. It would therefore be the largest registered flower in the world.

Decaying meat

The Rafflesia arnoldii is rare and only occurs in the rain forests of Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines and Malaysia. In addition to its large size, the flower can also be recognized by its scent; it stinks of decaying meat.

Strictly speaking, there are larger flowers on earth, but these are flower species that consist of several smaller flowers put together.
