Sustainability is an issue in almost all industries today, including gastronomy. In a customer survey by Feldschlösschen, 78 percent of restaurateurs in German and French-speaking Switzerland said: ecological aspects are important or even very important when attracting guests. Even 87 percent think that the issue of sustainability should be given more weight in their businesses and restaurants in the future.

How does the beer get into the bar in the first place?
The topic of sustainability in gastronomy also includes aspects that the guest does not think of first. That the beer comes from the tap? Of course. But how does the beer even get into the bar or restaurant?

In the future, twenty new 26-tonne electric trucks will play an important role in the distribution of beer supplies in Switzerland. The Feldschlösschen company presented these trucks on Wednesday in Rheinfelden AG: An important step in the environmentally friendly delivery of beverages throughout the country for the industry leader (15,000 directly supplied catering customers). Even if only twelve cars were on display at the presentation, the other eight are already in use at the same time.

“We want to bring our beers and drinks to our customers in the most environmentally friendly way possible,” says Thomas Stalder, Head of Logistics at Feldschlösschen. “These emission-free, quiet and energy-efficient e-trucks play a central role within our two-stage distribution network.”
–
The two-stage distribution network means: The beers – and other beverages – are delivered from the production facilities to the 15 regional logistics locations. 60 percent of this is done by train. It then goes directly from the regions to the individual catering establishments or to the drinks and retailers. The new e-trucks are ideally suited for this step. The fleet of twenty vehicles is the largest of its kind in Switzerland. It is the world’s first series production 26-tonne electric truck from Renault Trucks. Feldschlösschen had already ordered the models at the beginning of 2020. Corona also caused a certain delay here.

A range of 200 kilometers
In total, each electric truck has a net payload of 13,800 kilograms. The range of the truck: up to 200 kilometers. The electricity that the cars “fill up” comes from five photovoltaic systems in Rheinfelden, Satigny GE and Givisiez FR. So the CO2-Balance even better.

—-Together towards zero
Feldschlösschen’s sustainability strategy is called “Together Towards ZERO”: In a time of global challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and public health issues, sustainable products are more important than ever. The program has four main objectives: ZERO CO2-Footprint (the area on which the electric trucks have an impact), ZERO waste of water, ZERO irresponsible consumption and a ZERO accident culture.

–More about sustainability at Feldschlösschen—
For Feldschlösschen, however, the start with the electric trucks should only be an intermediate step, because “the electric trucks are equally popular with customers and employees”, as CEO Thomas Amstutz says. “As the market leader, we take ecological responsibility and consistently implement our sustainability strategy. In the last five years alone, we have had 23% CO in the entire company2 saved. ” In the medium term, the entire truck fleet is to be converted to electric operation.

Another issue with the new beer trucks is safety. The doors are glazed in the lower area so that the chauffeur can recognize a passing cyclist despite the difference in height. An e-truck is significantly quieter than a normal truck. Since it only hums, other road users often do not expect such a large and heavy vehicle. That is why “noise generators” are currently still being built into Renault Trucks. So that the truck hums at least a little.
