‘Largest demonstration so far’ against limiting abortion rights in Poland

In Warsaw, the national protest march against the curtailment of abortion rights has begun. Police in the Polish capital expect tonight’s demonstration to be the largest yet. Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the ruling party PiS, has called out counter-protesters help the churches defend against possible protests.

Protests have been staged in dozens of Polish cities in recent days, but the Strajk Kobiet (Women’s Strike) protest movement has called on demonstrators to join forces in Warsaw. The organizers call on participants to wear face masks and to keep their distance as much as possible.

Special forces have erected barricades around parliament and at strategic locations in the city.
