Largest blue diamond of all time under the hammer at Sotheby’s

The 15.10 carat stone was found in April 2021, according to Sotheby’s. According to the seller, the stone is exceptionally clear and intact.

Blue diamonds are extremely rare. Only five copies larger than ten carats have been auctioned in history.

The current auction record for a blue diamond is held by the Oppenheimer Blue. This stone is 14.6 carats and changed hands in 2016 for more than 51 million euros.

From known mine

The Cullinan Blue was found in the Cullinan mine in South Africa, just north of Johannesburg. Special gems are often unearthed in this mine, including the Great Star of Africa, a colorless 530-carat diamond that was used in the British crown jewels.

Earlier this month, Sotheby’s in London also auctioned a black diamond, which some say crashed from space to Earth. This one was considerably heavier, at 555.55 carats, and with a winning bid of 3.7 million euros, it also yielded a lot less.
