About 14,000 people were evacuated in the eastern Polish city of Lublin after a construction worker discovered a large unexploded bomb, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.
The police, military and public transport are helping with the evacuation, which is necessary for army sappers to retrieve the explosive device and take it away for disposal, a spokesman for the municipal authorities said. Roads in the area are closed to traffic.
Municipal authorities clarified that local residents are safe and housed in schools and other larger public buildings. They were instructed, before leaving their homes, to turn off the gas, water and electricity, close windows and doors, and take with them their personal documents and the medicines they need.
Local people are expected to be able to return home by early afternoon. Workers discovered the 250-kilogram bomb yesterday while excavating a newly built residential area.
Before the war, the site housed a Polish aircraft factory and airfield, which may have been the target of bombing during the fighting. During the occupation by Nazi Germany, there was also a prison and a labor camp in the area. In Poland, World War II bombs continue to be found regularly during excavations, as its territory was an arena of fierce fighting during the war.
