Large termite colonies have been found in the Netherlands for the first time, it appears research of the Invasive Exotic Species Knowledge Network. This North American ground termite causes damage and nuisance.
The so-called Reticulitermes flavipes is an exotic species that already occurs in several European countries. Termites can cause extensive damage to buildings, furniture, fences and other things made of wood.
Normally the termite is occasionally found in our country. For example, they come with imported goods. Usually it concerns one or a few (dead) insects, but now two large colonies have been found.
The colonies are spread over two houses, outbuildings and gardens in South Holland. One of the buildings is a large greenhouse complex. Several plants have been sold from this, making it possible that the termite has already spread further. Previous attempts to eradicate the colonies failed. Plant sales from the colony area have now been temporarily stopped.
The insects have caused significant damage to the buildings. The foundations have been eaten away and several wooden structures in the building have been damaged. The termites are also in the roof, which may no longer make the homes safe.
Colonies have also been found at two other (unknown) locations in the Netherlands. Researchers are looking at how big these are and how much damage has been caused.
A living colony was also found in the Netherlands in 2019. Climate changes and the increase in trade make it easier for termites to spread around the world.
