British shipping company P&O Ferries is laying off 800 employees and replacing them with cheap temporary workers. The staff received this message via a zoom conversation. The layoff went into effect immediately and staff on the boats were told to pack up immediately. The message has caused quite a stir in the United Kingdom. All ferry services are currently suspended.

There has also been a commotion in the British House of Commons. P&O Ferries and its parent company received millions of pounds of government support. Some MPs and the trade unions are now demanding that they repay that money.
