Large-scale testing of Wuhan residents • Names of offenders public in Japan

Wuhan authorities want to test all 11 million residents for the corona virus, it was announced in a press conference. The announcement follows the news that local corona infections have been detected in the Chinese metropolis for the first time in more than a year. The city is known as the place where the corona pandemic broke out a year and a half ago.

On Monday, seven new infections with the corona virus were diagnosed in Wuhan. Three of the cases involved a locally acquired infection. It is the first cluster since the Chinese authorities managed to bring the virus under control through a strict lockdown more than a year ago.

90 new infections have been reported across China. “For China, that is a high number, because they want to get to zero cases of Covid-19. They have a zero-tolerance policy, just like Australia and New Zealand,” says correspondent Garrie van Pinxteren. “They should actually remain that strict, because there is no herd immunity and the Chinese corona vaccines protect to a lesser extent against the delta variant of the virus. If those strict rules were released now, the virus would spread like a fire throughout China.”
