Nine police officers were slightly injured during a large-scale chase in Belgium. After an almost 100 kilometer long chase through three different Belgian provinces, the police were able to track down the suspects.
According to Belgian media the police wanted to check a suspicious vehicle near the city of Leuven. The two occupants, aged 22 and 23, refused to stop and continued driving. Halfway through the crazy ride, the fugitive driver caused an accident in which several police cars were involved.
“The officers all survived. They still crashed at a speed of 120 to 130 kilometers per hour,” says Mayor Christophe De Graef of Diest.
After the crash, the two suspects did not give up and continued their way towards Antwerp. Ultimately, the vehicle was stuck about 35 kilometers before Antwerp.
It is not yet clear why the two men continued driving. According to the Flemish newspaper The standard the two are known to the police for drug-related cases.
Negative reactions
According to the mayor, the officers are doing well under the circumstances, but are “mentally a little less well”. De Graef states that the officers also see the negative reactions on social media about the pursuit.
“There is someone who writes: ‘The bright spot of my day: police officers who crash’. They have already seen such reactions in the hospital and have read them to each other. That is terrible,” says De Graef.
