Rescuers were alerted around 9:45 am. Professional fire brigade spokesman Jürgen Figerl: “At no time was an explosive concentration measured, so there was never any danger to the patients.” The building was therefore not evacuated. The smell of gas is said to have been carried into the building from the outside through ventilation.
The smell of gas came from another building
The investigation into the lawsuit, in which several AKH and Wiener Netze technicians were involved, among others, revealed that the smell of gas was coming from the works in a nearby company building. According to Figerl, when the people in the clinic building noticed this, they started leaving the building on their own. They have since returned. “It’s back to normal,” the spokesperson said.
As expected, the large-scale operation also had a huge impact on surrounding roads, particularly the belt in both directions.
No short circuit connection
The smell of gas has no connection to a short on a transformer in the high-voltage area of the hospital’s power supply, which, according to AKH spokeswoman Karin Fehringer, occurred at 8:47 am. She reported: “The emergency power operation was started successfully, automatically, immediately. The clinical areas were thus supplied with electricity as planned, while the operating room and the intensive care units were continuously powered. The return to the public electricity grid took place in a very short time, so that the AKH Vienna was back in normal operation. A detailed root cause analysis is in preparation. Faults are processed in order of priority. “
