Large-scale Mafia operation in Italy: 46 arrests

The police arrested 46 people in a large-scale operation against the Sicilian mafia. One in Germany, reports the Italian police.

The operation targeted clans of the Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia. They took place in Barrafranca and Pietraperzia, in the Sicilian province of Enna.

Police identified Raffaele Bevilacqua, a former Christian Democrat lawyer and local politician in the 1980s, as the local Mafia boss. Bevilacqua was sentenced to life in prison for previous Mafia-related crimes, but was released two years ago for health reasons. According to the police, he immediately resumed his criminal activities.

One of Bevilacqua’s relatives was arrested in Germany. His daughter Maria Concetta was placed under house arrest.

In addition to the arrests, the police also seized more than 1 million euros in goods.
