The university hospital in Maastricht is starting a large-scale investigation into the persistent complaints that some covid patients suffer from. Little is known about these complaints, which are called lung covid.

The Maastricht researchers hope, among other things, to be able to develop a model with which they can predict whether patients will have persistent complaints from their infection and which complaints these will be.
Thousands of patients
The study examines the medical records of 10,000 people infected with COVID-19. This concerns both people who had a mild form of corona and patients who were admitted to intensive care. Patients also receive a list of questions about their complaints, quality of life and participation. The researchers hope to learn more about lung covid in this way.
“We know too little about lung covid,” says lead researcher and clinical epidemiologist Sander van Kuijk. “The complaints are not easy to analyze. For example, there are people who were seriously ill without persistent complaints afterwards. But there are also people with severe persistent complaints, who had very limited problems with COVID-19 itself.”
Quality of life
According to the researchers, lung covid is a common problem that has a major impact on the quality of life of people who suffer from it.
The UMC+ will receive funding of more than half a million euros for the research. Other medical institutions are also participating in the project, including Zuyderland, Adelante and the academic centers in Utrecht, Nijmegen and Leiden.
