(pol – 4/5/23) On April 4th, a large-scale day of action against the so-called underground economy took place. The Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) of the Frankfurt am Main Public Prosecutor’s Office
The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the prosecuting authorities of the federal states are thus sending a strong signal against cyber criminals. Together they searched 62 objects nationwide.
The Cybercrime and Digital Traces department of the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office manages and coordinates the operational measures in the state. This resulted in six searches and 130 confiscations. The accused are accused of a large number of fraud offenses in online trading as well as spying out data, falsifying data relevant to evidence and stealing data.
During the investigation, the ZIT and the BKA cooperated closely with the American FBI, Europol, the Dutch National High Tech Crime Unit and other international partners. In particular, the suspects are said to have offered stolen access data for e-commerce and online payment services for a few euros on the criminal sales platform “Genesis Market”. One million e-mail accounts, for example, were available from as little as 50 euros. The platform has existed since 2018 and is the largest of its kind.
The American authorities switched them off immediately on April 4 and have been evaluating the data ever since. In more than 70 cases, the traces of the accused lead to Germany. Six of them live in Baden-Württemberg. Following the searches, criminal procedural measures were taken against the six men aged between 22 and 40. There were no arrests. The police headquarters in Freiburg, Heilbronn, Karlsruhe, Konstanz and Mannheim as well as the cybercrime departments of the public prosecutor’s offices in Stuttgart and Mannheim are entrusted with the investigations. Coordination is the responsibility of the BKA and the ZIT. The investigations are ongoing.
