An estimated 60,000 people attended a major pop concert in New York’s Central Park on Saturday (local time). The concert was supposed to celebrate the end of the lockdown in the metropolis. But halfway through the concert was interrupted due to approaching thunder and lightning. Hurricane Henri is headed for the US East Coast.

Carlos Santana, Andrea Bocelli and LL Cool J had already finished their gigs, but Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith had yet to take the stage when the decision was made to send everyone home. Most tickets to the concert were free; visitors older than 12 years had to show a vaccination certificate.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the concert in June as part of a “Homecoming Week” to show the world that New York has moved out of the corona pandemic. Earlier this week, several smaller concerts were held all over the city. New York was hit hard by the pandemic in early 2020. More than 33,000 people have died from the effects of the corona virus. Meanwhile, about 68 percent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
