Joint action of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, GDBOP and NSlS against child sexual abuse in our country. During it, 13 people were arrested – 5 in Sofia and 8 in the country, suspected of pedophilia. This was announced by the director of the National Investigative Service, Borislav Sarafov.
The action takes place throughout the country: the convicts are in Sofia, Varna, Devnya, Elin Pelin, Pernik, Stara Zagora, Haskovo. More than 30 investigators, more than 30 employees of the “Cybercrime” department of the State Police, more than 60 gendarmes participate. About 20 addresses were searched, phones, computers, flash drives, hard drives were seized.
Sarafov disclosed the profile of those arrested – among them are a civil aviation pilot of a low-cost airline, an electrician, a motorcyclist, a locksmith, a sports shop owner, computer scientists, a general worker , an auto mechanic, real estate appraiser. The ages of the children who became the object of interest of pedophiles ranged from 2 to 10 years. The detained men are between 30 and 40 years old, there are also around 60 years old. Half of them are married with children. Most have good financial opportunities and are not socially weak, Sarafov announced. The inmates did not know each other. They communicated with each other using virtual names.
He stressed that finding and downloading pornography is not easy and requires special skills and software. “In the detainees’ computers and phones, we found videos and photos containing brutal scenes of child sexual abuse,” the deputy attorney general said. According to him, the children come from the Far East or from the former Soviet republics.
Sarafov expressed the hope that by today the control prosecutors will press charges against all detainees. The penalty for offenses of this nature is imprisonment of up to 6 years and a fine of up to 8,000 levs. Although the men distributed pornography in a virtual environment, the psycho-physical profile of these people showed that they transferred very easily to a real environment, explained the head of the NSLS.
“Our legislation is outdated, we have inadequate sentences and unfortunately this case is just like that,” said Chief Prosecutor Siika Mileva’s spokesman.
Two of the men who shared files containing child sexual abuse material did so in the vicinity of a home for children deprived of parental care. It is verified whether there are Bulgarian children among the victims of pedophilia.
Over 300-400 thousand IP addresses download and share such content every day. Over the weekend, they rise to more than 600-700 thousand, said Commissioner Dimitrov, who heads the “Cybercrimes” department at the GDBOP.
