Large production with 200 actors: “Stabat Mater” – rediscovered by the city band

Stockach. There have been intensive rehearsals in the last few days at the Stockach town band in the rehearsal room at the elementary school, because a truly big production is coming up for the first weekend in November. On Saturday, November 2nd, the epoch-making “Stabat Mater” by Karl Jenkins will take place in Winterthur, on Sunday, November 3rd, 5 p.m., then in the Jahnhalle Stockach with the two symphonic wind orchestras conducted by Helmut Hubov and two additional choirs on the Stage, which together makes up around 200 participants and promises a strong performance.

The composer Karl Jenkins, who began his career as a jazz rocker with “Soft Cell” and released “Stabat Mater” in 2008 to a very strong response, is by no means new territory in Stockach. The piece about Mary’s compassion for the death of her son Jesus on the cross, which was chosen as the theme, was also staged ten years ago together with the Stadtharmonie Winterthur-Töss and even Pope Francis presented a recording of this concert at an audience receive.

Two years ago, the Stockach city band staged Karl Jenkins’ “Armed Man” in a huge version with the Nellenburg-Kantorei and the Stockach Chamber Choir and received a great response; Karl Hubov’s passion for Jenkins is understandable. The rehearsals of the Stockach part of this project orchestra already show why, because the music is incredibly delicate even without vocal accompaniment and is characterized by many atmospheric images that really challenge the musicians.

After this first rehearsal phase, the Stadtmusik will now move to Winterthur for the rehearsal weekend. In a further phase, the complete work will be created with the “Alpha-cappella”, the official choir of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences with choir director Jens Hoffmann, as well as the choir “vocal track” of the Winterthur Töss Reformed Church under the direction of Carmen Reverdin.

In addition, the major work is accompanied by the soloists Christin Maho (ethno-soprano) and Angela Kerrison (soprano), both of whom are also well-known in Stockach from previous performances.
