Between 2009 and 2020, the health of 9,000 South Limburgers was thoroughly mapped. Now they are being re-examined in The Maastricht Study.
Special research
The scientific world is looking forward to the results of The Maastricht Study, because it is not often the case that the health of such a large group of people is measured so extensively over such a long period. The aim of the project is to learn more about chronic diseases, especially type 2 diabetes.
rounded
The first phase of The Maastricht Study, which mainly consisted of generating data and knowledge, was completed in October 2020. The results provide a good insight into the health of the Limburg population. The data provided by the measurements of 9,000 participants have revealed relationships between type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, but also depression, dementia and certain eye diseases. The research has resulted in more than ninety scientific publications and 36 full-fledged PhD programs.
Second phase
In the second phase of The Maastricht Study, participants are invited to undergo all measurements that have already been taken before. This provides the opportunity to draw conclusions about cause and effect, as well as the speed at which changes in health take place. The ultimate goal is to translate innovative knowledge into practical applications that improve the physical and mental well-being of Limburgers. Important goals are the prevention of chronic diseases and improvement of the lifestyle, the social environment, the quality of life and therefore general health. In order to improve the resilience and self-reliance of the Limburg population.
Financing
For the time being, 4000 participants in phase 1 are re-invited to phase 2. This has to do with the financing of the project. The Province of Limburg has made 1.5 million euros available. Department head Carla van der Kallen: “The goal is to eventually re-examine all participants from phase 1. And I trust that we will collect the necessary money for this. When we started in 2009, our target was 6000 participants and we will eventually have enough. received financial support to investigate 9,000. “
