The large number of deaths from the coronavirus reported by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) on Saturday is the result of an ‘administrative catch-up’. The GGD IJsselland reports this site. 38 new corona deaths were reported on Saturday, more than double the number of the day before.
Dutch GGDs are commissioned by the RIVM to check how many people have died as a result of the virus. In the case of deceased persons, it is therefore checked whether that person also tested positive for the virus.
As a result of this analysis, 28 previously unreported corona deaths were discovered in the IJsselland region, which have now been added to the data. COVID-19 is the possible cause of death for these individuals, but there may also be another reason. These people have therefore already died in recent months. The region emphasizes that one person in IJsselland died of COVID-19 in the past week.
There is no obligation to report deaths as a result of the corona virus, the GGD explains. That duty is there for positive infections. As a result, the overview of corona deaths is not complete.
On Saturday, the RIVM also reported 2,713 new positive corona tests and 29 new hospital admissions.
