Large gold find at Venloos waste company was not gold at all

During a raid on a recycling company in Venlo last month, hundreds of kilos of gold worth millions of euros were not seized. The prosecution said at the time that it was gold, but comes back from that.

“On further investigation by the Netherlands Forensic Institute it appeared that it was not gold but other metals,” says the OM now, without saying what kind of metals it is.

Lawyer Marcel Heuvelmans immediately after the raid already questioned the seized metal. “My client has responded with surprise,” he said at the time. According to him, it was brass.

Sports cars and expensive watches

The police raided the Venlo company on July 15, together with the FIOD and the judiciary. The investigation focused on money laundering, fencing, forgery and violation of environmental regulations,

The FIOD and the police seized three homes, administration, hundreds of kilos of metal, 450,000 euros in cash, expensive sports cars and seventeen luxury watches. Investigation services also found stolen goods such as metal plates. In addition, the Defense Explosives Clearance Service had to dismantle a container with obsolete ammunition and mortars.

The seized metal has since been returned to the recycling company, writes 1Limburg. The owners are still suspected of money laundering. The investigation into this is still ongoing.

The main suspect in the case is still in custody on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons, stolen goods and possession of drugs.
