A major gas leak caused a chaotic situation in Tilburg on Tuesday morning. At the intersection of Centaurusweg and Zuiderkruisweg, a main line was hit, which is located under a high-voltage pylon. To prevent greater danger, the tension was removed. As a result, part of Boxtel was temporarily without power.
To be on the safe side, the area was cordoned off within a radius of 100 meters. According to the security region, it would not be safe inside. Video images show how large tracts of ground ‘bubbled’. A bystander said it was tough to watch. “You saw a towering spout of mud. And then you just saw the heat from the gas.”
An Enexis technician was present to repair the leak. That has now been achieved. The barriers have been removed and traffic can now move again.
Power failure
There is a high-voltage pylon near the site of the leak. The power was quickly cut off. Not without consequences: about 14,000 households in Boxtel were without power for more than an hour.
The leak therefore arose during work in which the current overhead high-voltage cable between Tilburg-Noord and Best is being replaced by an underground connection. Over a length of 32 kilometers all high-voltage pylons must eventually disappear. That’s a total of 110.
