Hundreds of homes have already been destroyed by the fires that devastate Oregon, in the United States, and that can cause “a great number” of deaths, said today the governor of the state, Kate Brown.
More than 48,000 hectares burned and at least five locations were “largely destroyed”, while mass evacuations are ongoing, the governor added at a press conference, stressing that the fire could cause “the greatest number of deaths and destruction in the history “of the state of Oregon.
Fueled by drought and strong winds, large-scale fires are spreading across the western coast of the United States, from Washington state on the Canadian border to the Mexican border near San Diego, California.

“In the past 24 hours, Oregon has been hit by unprecedented fires, with significant damage and devastating consequences for the entire state,” added Kate Brown.
The governor says she expects “a lot of losses, both in terms of buildings and lives”.
The Detroit, Blue River, Vida, Phoenix and Talent communities were “destroyed on a large scale,” Brown said, while warning that weather conditions have not improved and other communities are at risk.
In California, the fire devastated more than 10,000 square kilometers this year and killed at least eight people, according to firefighters.
