Large Fire in Textile Storage Warehouse in Blanc-Mesnil: Extensive Paris Fire Brigade Intervention and Precautions Taken

As in similar disasters in recent months, videos of plumes of black smoke visible from tens of kilometers around multiplied in a few seconds on social networks. This Monday, a large fire broke out shortly before 12:30 p.m. in a textile storage warehouse in Blanc-Mesnil. No injuries were reported. “A municipal police officer was inconvenienced by the fumes, but it is benign,” indicates Jean-Philippe Ranquet (various right), the mayor of the city.

The fire-ravaged building was operated by Ideal Shoes, a company specializing in business-to-business sales of women’s shoes. It is located at number 9 avenue Armand-Esders, in the Coudray activity zone. Bounded by Avenue Albert-Einstein, the Nationale 2 and the A3 motorway, it mainly accommodates office, logistics and storage activities.

In the minutes following the alert, the Seine-Saint-Denis prefecture invited the population to avoid the area and not to overload the telephone lines during the intervention of the Paris fire brigade (BSPP). The latter mobilized more than a hundred fire fighters and around thirty engines, particularly with the aim of preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring warehouses.

“The fire was limited to just the building, which collapsed on itself,” assures a BSPP spokesperson. Which specifies that the extinction phase should last “at least all night”, due to the presence of balls and rolls of fabric at the heart of the site. “We need backhoe loaders to reach them, spread them out and drown them,” he adds. It will smoke white for a little while. »

The prefect requested a smoke analysis

“As a precautionary measure, and although this is a fire involving textile products, all residents of the area are asked not to open the windows,” instructs the prefecture. Jacques Witkowski, the prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis, requested a smoke analysis. Two vehicles from the central laboratory of the judicial police, generally called upon in such cases, were seen leaving the scene of the disaster around 4 p.m.

As the firefighters’ intervention continued into the afternoon, Ideal Shoes employees watched the plume of smoke rise into the sky while smoking a cigarette, helpless. When contacted, a company manager declined to comment.

In recent months, several spectacular fires in warehouses storing textile products have broken out in Seine-Saint-Denis, particularly near Aubervilliers. Last spring, in the space of a fortnight, two buildings of 3,000 m² and 700 m² were destroyed by flames. The largest fire broke out in the warehouse of an underwear and lingerie brand.
