Large demonstrations have broken out after Pakistan’s ex-prime minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday. In several cities, the internet and social media are closed.
Three TV channels report on the restrictions on internet access and use of social media. In addition, private schools in the country are closed on Wednesday.
According to Geo News, Khan was arrested by a paramilitary force when he was to appear in court in the capital Islamabad in connection with a corruption case. A video of the arrest shows dozens of police officers in heavy riot gear surrounding Khan and ushering him into a black van.
The arrest has sparked violent protests in several parts of the country. In both Karachi and Lahore, the police fired tear gas and water cannons at the protesters, while in Islamabad, the neighboring city of Rawalpindi and Peshawar, the protesters blocked the roads.
In several places, it was reported that angry crowds tried to force their way into military installations.
