EDE Shuttle buses are driving back and forth on the Ginkelse Heide in Ede. There are many cars on the road to attend the Airborne Commemoration today. The municipality calls on people to take their bikes or use public transport.
The public gathers early Saturday morning for the Airborne Landings and Commemoration. 80 years ago, Operation Market Garden was carried out.
100,000 visitors are expected. Just before 11:00, there are an estimated 55,000 visitors, says a spokeswoman for the municipality of Ede. The municipality of Ede calls on people to take their bikes. “There are many fences to park your bike. The fences are numbered so you can find your bike again.”
The bicycle parking lots, with space for 27,000 bicycles, are all full. Also, more than 20,000 people came by shuttle bus or by invitation. The spokeswoman expects the number of visitors to increase to around 80,000.
For people who do not have their bike nearby, there are free shuttle buses from Ede-Wageningen station. The buses run from 07:30 to 16:30 between the Ginkelse Heide and the station.
The crowds are everywhere. This morning, Ede-Wageningen station is completely jammed with cars. There is also a 30-minute wait for the shuttle buses. On images, an ANP reporter sees that there are very long lines both in front of and inside the station.
The municipality reports that all parking spaces are full at the Ginkelse Heide. The N224 from Arnhem is closed. But there are also masses of bicycles on the cycle paths and traffic jams on the heath.
There will be a program in the air and on the ground between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
