‘Large cities want a maximum of 30 km/h within built-up areas’

The cities write this today in a letter to the House of Representatives, where it is AD writes about.

“In the past we gave the car too much space in cities, now quality of life is paramount. If we want to better protect pedestrians and cyclists, we have to take action,” the Amsterdam alderman for Traffic and Transport told the newspaper.

Mandatory speed bumps

The four cities want a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour on larger roads in built-up areas. This is now legally difficult, because ‘speed-reducing measures’ such as speed bumps are mandatory on those roads. This is unfeasible on major roads, the municipalities state in the letter.

Emergency services such as ambulances and fire brigade cannot be on site quickly enough if all roads are full of speed bumps, the Amsterdam alderman explains to the newspaper.

Legally liable

If cities do not install speed bumps but do apply a maximum of 30 kilometers per hour, they are legally liable in the event of accidents.

Tomorrow the House will debate road safety. In other Dutch municipalities such as Gouda, Groningen and Leiden, the maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour was already introduced in considerably more streets last year.
