large American universities pinned by a collective complaint

Published on :

In the United States, large universities have agreed on financial aid granted to students, favoring the wealthiest. And this is not the first time that universities have been caught in legal turmoil.

Yale, Georgetown, Columbia, etc., names that make you dream. And yet, 16 of the most prestigious universities in the United States are the subject of a lawsuit filed in an Illinois court. According to Wall Street Journal, which reveals the case, five former students accuse these universities of having agreed among themselves to fix the amount of financial aid granted to students, while minimizing them. A policy that would penalize the middle and poor classes, knowing that university is very expensive in the United States, those who access it often run into debt over many years.

Many scandals

The lawyers interviewed by the Wall Street Journal estimate that 170,000 former students could join the lawsuit filed in Illinois. Universities are not their first scandal. In 1991, a similar case hit the headlines.

And three years ago, in 2019, a scam of another kind came to light. Wealthy families, including Hollywood stars, had paid bribes to a consultant to get their children admitted to these prestigious universities. A documentary, Operation Varsity Blues, broadcast on Netflix, had told the investigation which had caused much ink to flow because of the notoriety of some accused.
