Laptop maker for Apple, HP and Dell has been hit by ransomware – Computer – News

Taiwanese technology manufacturer Compal has reportedly been affected by DoublePaymer ransomware. The criminals would convert 14 million euros. Compal denies that it is ransomware.

Compal has been hit by a cyber attack, Korean media wrote last weekend. A spokesperson for the electronics company, which makes laptops for Acer, Apple, Dell, HP and Lenovo, among others, denies against UDN that it is an attack.

The company’s systems would suffer a malfunction, but repairs would have been made and production would be running as normal, the spokesman said. He also denies that Compal is being extorted, as reported by the media.

It’s alright according to BleepingComputer however, it is definitely a ransomware attack; the site publishes the extortion notice addressed to Compal. It contains a link to a page on which a ransom is demanded for 1100 bitcoin. That is converted, at the time of writing, 14 million euros.

The ransomware used is said to be DoppelPaymer, enterprise-focused malware that nestles in Windows networks via administrator accounts and then infects devices on a network. Not only does DoppelPaymer encrypt files, but it also sends this data away, so that the ransom demand can be reinforced with the threat of publicly publishing these files.
