Laos: Weather and Climate

Watch out for the monsoon

Favor the dry season between November and March

A Southeast Asian country nestled in the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, Laos has a tropical climate over most of its territory and temperate in the north, along the mountain range. The country is therefore influenced by the monsoon. If you plan to go there to ride a motorcycle, it is better to skip this period.

Laos: weather and climate

The wet season normally takes place from April to October and is characterized by heavy rains, high temperatures and therefore high ambient humidity, especially during the summer with almost daily rains and mercury that exceeds 30° on average. .

The dry season is thus more pleasant. Beginning in November and generally ending in March, winter presents conditions that are much more conducive to travel and discovery. This is first of all the case because of the absence of rain, but also for the slightly cooler temperatures. Understand here “in comparison with summer”, because the mercury remains around 30°C on average, but the decrease in ambient humidity makes the climate more pleasant. This is especially true in December and January.

The month of March begins the rise in temperatures and can see the rains start depending on the year.

In the mountainous north it is colder, especially in winter. If you plan to gain altitude during this period, it is better to bring clothes with you that offer good thermal protection. Modular equipment with removable thermal lining and waterproof membrane and ventilation system will be particularly useful in the country.
