Irish Pianist Reimagines Works of Master Composer Turlough O’Carolan

Irish pianist and composer David Vesey has released his debut album, "Carolan Reflections," a captivating reinterpretation of the timeless works of composer Turlough O’Carolan. This 12-track collection blends the eloquence of classical piano with the vibrant spirit of traditional Irish music, offering a fresh perspective on O’Carolan’s enduring legacy.

O’Carolan, celebrated as Ireland’s most famous composer from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, played a profound role in Vesey’s musical development. "I feel privileged to share my arrangements of O’Carolan’s music,” Vesey said. "These reflections are personal in nature, representing my relationship with O’Carolan as a composer and also broader reflections on Irish identity. I hope these arrangements will bring O’Carolan’s music to new audiences and continue his legacy in a modern context.”

From his childhood, Vesey was immersed in O’Carolan’s music. He first learned the composer’s pieces on the tin whistle under the tutelage of his primary school teacher, John O’Brien. This early exposure deepened through his involvement with Spink Comhaltas, where Paula Dowling McDonald further introduced him to the rich tapestry of O’Carolan’s work.

"Carolan Reflections" is more than just a tribute to the past. Vesey sees it as an exploration of O’Carolan’s unique position at the intersection of tradition and innovation.

“O’Carolan was alive at the time of composers like Vivaldi, Handel and Bach,” Vesey explained. “His music bridges the gap between the Irish traditional and classical worlds. The harp, O’Carolan’s chosen instrument, shares many similarities with the piano, and through the piano I aim to continue a tradition started by figures like Seán Ó Riada and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, who brought O’Carolan’s music into new realms.”

"Carolan Reflections" is an musically engaging and culturally significant project, offering listeners a chance to experience the timeless beauty of O’Carolan’s compositions through a fresh, modern lens. The album is available on CD and all major streaming platforms.
