Kray: “In order to be able to operate our thermal exhaust gas cleaning system here in a climate-neutral manner in the future, we are currently preparing a feasibility study for the use of green hydrogen.” This study is being prepared by JUWI, a service provider for renewable energies and a subsidiary of MVV Energie from Mannheim.
The idea: wind turbines from wind farms supply electricity for an electrolyser, which uses it to produce hydrogen in an environmentally friendly way. “Green electricity in our production also makes our products more sustainable – and thus more attractive for our customers,” adds Rolf Kettner, Head of Energy Procurement. The company’s carbon footprint is expected to decrease by 33,000 tons per year. Not only because of the planned new energy supply in Mannheim, of course, but also at the Bergkamen, Bitterfeld, Brilon, Brunsbüttel and Antwerp locations.
A nationwide supply contract for green electricity from sun and wind power has already been signed. By 2033, Lanxess wants to switch to renewable power supply worldwide.
Carbon footprint for all products
The upstream and downstream value chain should also be climate-neutral by 2050. An in-house tool (Product Carbon Footprint Engine) calculates the CO2 footprint for the products: It accesses data from different company divisions and adds up all emissions “from the cradle to the factory gate”.
All greenhouse gas emissions during production, product-specific emissions including the raw materials, energy, operating resources and transport used, as well as emissions from waste disposal are recorded.
