Lanxess Job Cuts: Chemcial Company Slashes 870 Positions Worldwide to Combat Economic Weakness

Cologne (NRW) – The chemistry is no longer right. Mood of crisis and job alarm at Lanxess!

Due to the economic weakness in the chemical industry, the specialty chemicals company is cutting around one in 15 of its jobs worldwide. In order to become more efficient, costs should be reduced by 150 million euros per year, a company spokesman said on Tuesday evening.

The measures include the reduction of 870 full-time positions, 460 of which are in Germany. Lanxess currently has around 13,000 jobs worldwide, a good half of them in Germany. The dismantling should take place as quickly as possible. The “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” had previously reported.

The austerity program also includes a package of measures intended to reduce costs by a one-off amount of 100 million euros. This includes lower travel costs and a salary waiver for the board of directors. Lanxess had already announced the two savings targets – 150 million euros annually and a one-off 100 million euros – in August. The company has now also published the number of jobs that are to be cut.

The positions in Germany are to be eliminated, especially in administration, “in order to slim down the structures there and adapt them to the company’s economic situation,” said Lanxess. The red pencil is particularly applied to the Cologne, Leverkusen, Krefeld-Uerdingen and Mannheim locations.

The reduction project is to be implemented by not filling vacant positions. Employees are also offered termination agreements. (dpa)
