Washington. With a monumental Grand Slam by Lane Thomas, the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 and advanced to the Major League Championship Series, where the New York Yankees await them.
Thomas’ four-run homer in the fifth inning settled this competitive American League division series, decided in favor of Cleveland by a 3-2 aggregate.
In the National League, the Championship Series will be played starting Sunday by the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets.
The duel between the Yankees and Guardians begins on Monday with the two best teams in the regular phase in the American League.
The Guardians, the second seed, reached this stage for the first time since 2016 after subduing the resistance of the surprising Tigres.
The Detroit team, which did not reach playoffs since 2014, they swept the favored Houston Astros in the wild card round and had two opportunities to also dispatch Cleveland.
With no margin for error, the Guardians tied the tie on Thursday in Detroit and this Saturday they took advantage of the home field in a game in which their rivals took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Right there, Guardianes exploded with five runs, four from Gran Slam of Thomas.
