Rescuers and residents continue to search for the missing. Police said 165 people were missing as a result of the disaster.
The authorities do not hope that survivors will be found under the rubble. President Jair Bolsonaro said that the picture in the city Petropolis reminded him of “war scenes”.
Officials say at least 856 people have been housed in shelters.
The police also said that the number of missing persons is decreasing as more bodies are identified and families are able to find living and healthy relatives. So far, 124 bodies have been identified, including 28 children.
It is also noted that on Sunday, the so-called “mega cleanup operation” was carried out in the city of Petropolis. It was attended by 370 sanitary workers sent as reinforcements from the nearby cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi.
The mayor’s office urged residents to stay at home except in cases of “emergency” to allow cleaners to clear the piles of dirt and debris still clogging the streets.
“We need to clear the streets so we can speed up the rebuilding of our city,” Mayor Rubens Bomtempo said.
