Landslide caused by Typhoon Shanshan leaves three dead in Japan

Tokio. The typhoon Shanshanwhich made landfall on Thursday morning in Kagoshima Prefecture (southwest Japan), has caused torrential rains and strong winds, resulting in three deaths, 82 injuries and one missing in the country.

A landslide in Gamagori city in central Aichi Prefecture triggered by warm, humid air from the typhoon on Tuesday night left three dead and two injured, local media reported.

As of 17:50 local time today, the powerful storm had caused 79 injuries in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, and one in Mie prefecture.

Meanwhile, a man in his 60s fell overboard while seeking shelter near Kagoshima and remains missing.

Shanshanwhich weakened after making landfall at around 8:00 a.m. local time, has disrupted communications services and caused widespread power and water outages.

The suspension of high-speed train services (Shinkansen) on the Kyushu line and parts of the Sanyo and Tokaido lines, as well as numerous flight cancellations, have also been reported.

The typhoon is expected Shanshan slowly move eastwards from Friday and could cause further disruption, so authorities have advised people to remain alert for adverse weather conditions, including torrential rain.
