The exhibition was created by curator Gabriels Pérez-Barreiro, who curated the 33rd São Paulo Biennial. The exhibition in London showcases the landscape and geometric abstraction works of Paulus Pasta, which prove the artist’s enduring interest in color, space, memories and the passage of time. His abstract paintings have palpable architectural forms, while his figurative works often have a disturbing sense of ambiguity. All of Paulu Pasta’s works are characterized by subtle tonal nuances.
The painter’s career spans almost forty years. In Brazil, he is a respected “artist’s artist” – he is often talked about, referred to by other artists. Paulu Pasta is an active educator who has influenced a whole generation of young artists. He is a continuation of the tradition of art pedagogy, in Brazil there is still a strong belief that knowledge, technique and principles of thinking should be transferred from one artist to another.
Gallery Cecilia Brunson Projects consistently introducing Latin American artists to London audiences. The Paulu Paste exhibition was organized in cooperation with the São Paulo Gallery Millan. The exhibition catalog has also been published – this is the first publication dedicated to Paulus Past in English. Soon his works will be on view in New York.
“Paulu Pasta’s work is characterized by silence and introspection. In his art, he does not come up with messages that would easily fit into one of the thematic group exhibitions that are so popular internationally. He does not try to explain or illustrate Brazil or any other subject. He first and foremost focuses on his medium – for painting – and this makes the works completely accessible, but at the same time enigmatic,” writes curator Gabriels Pérez-Barreiro in the exhibition catalogue.
“There is great interest in Latin American artists in the world, many exhibitions are held, their works are exhibited both in the Tate Gallery in London and in the Museum of Modern Art in New York MoMA,” says Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro. “Paulo Pasta is the heart and soul of Brazilian contemporary art. Anyone who knows anything about Brazilian art knows Paulo Pasta,” adds the curator. “You can say that as an art educator, Paulo Pasta has created his own school in São Paulo. He is known as a color composer. Landscape and abstraction are closely related to the artist,” emphasizes Gabriels Pérez-Barreiro.
Paulu Pasta explains that he learned to see and understand the landscape directly through painting. The landscape is associated with memory for him, as he has always painted the place around São Paulo where he grew up. Paula Pasta claims that he has always been stimulated by his passion for painting: “Color is atmospheric, color develops and expands over time. If I imagine an atmosphere, I imagine a landscape. If I don’t remember, I don’t feel. If I don’t feel, I don’t paint.”
