Who is Landorus and what are the forces of nature?
Source: The Pokémon Company
Introduced in the Generation V games Pokémon Black and Pokémon White, the Forces of Nature are a Legendary Trio. Fans have also called them Legendary Genies, Kami Trio, and Cloud Trio. These include Tornadus – the Cyclone Pokémon, Thundurus – the Lightning Strike Pokémon, and Landorus – the Abundance Pokémon. Landorus, the strongest of the three, was said to have prevented the other two from causing destruction in the Unova region. In more recent times, the mythical Pokémon Meloetta was able to calm the three Forces of Nature to save the Unova Region from its destructive powers.

The Forces of Nature are also some of the few select Pokémon with multiple Forms. Normally seen in their Incarnate forms where they resemble geniuses, they can also adopt a Therian form where they resemble a bird, dragon, and big cat. The Therian forms of the Forces of Nature will make their debut in Pokémon Go in just a couple of weeks. Guides for the other forces of nature and Therian forms can be found here:

What are the best counters for Landorus?
As a ground and flying type, Landorus has only two weaknesses: ice and water. It has a double weakness with ice types though, which is what you’ll want to focus on for this raid. It is capable of dealing Ground, Rock, Dragon, and Fighting damage.
Mega Abomasnow
Source: The Pokémon Company
Unsurprisingly for an ice-type-focused raid, Mega Abomasnow is the best non-Shadow counter for Landorus. This Ice and Earth type resists the Earth-type moves of the Abundance Pokémon, but takes double damage from its Rock-type and Fight-type moves. Still, with its improved stats and the boost it gives to other Ice-type attackers, if possible, you’ll want to have one on your team. Powder Snow and Weather Ball are the moves you’ll want your Mega Abomasnow to know for this raid.
Darmanitano de Galar
Source: The Pokémon Company
One of the only Gen VIII Pokémon in Pokémon Go, Galarian Darmanitan is an excellent counter for Landorus. As a pure ice type, it does not provide useful resistance to fighting and takes double damage from Rock and Fighting. Still, most of the best accountants will bring weaknesses to this fight. Thanks to his first stage, Darumaka is in Eggs often, most players already have at least one or two, and plenty of Candy to light them up. If you bring Galarian Darmanitan on this raid, you’ll want Ice Fang for fast movement and Avalanche for charged ones.
Mamoswine
Source: The Pokémon Company
Formerly the best Pokémon to take on Landorus, Mamoswine remains the most accessible top counter thanks to Swinub Community Day. However, you don’t want it to be the exclusive Community Day move, Ancient Power. Instead, you’ll want your Mamoswine to know about Powder Snow and Avalanche. This type of soil and ice does not provide noticeable resistance to the fight and takes twice the damage of fighting-type moves.
Mewtwo
Source: The Pokemon Company
The legendary Gen I psychic type, Mewtwo performs very well against Landorus thanks to his ability to learn Ice Beam. It has no weaknesses that Landorus can exploit and is one of the few counters that can resist Fighting-type moves. Thanks to the Kanto celebration that just concluded, most players have had the opportunity to add Mewtwo to their collection. Psycho Cut and Ice Beam are the moves you’ll want for this fight, but if you’re going to TM for Ice Beam, make sure you don’t ditch the Shadow Ball or Psystrike, both of which are Legacy moves that are far more useful.
Weavile
Source: The Pokémon Company
Another excellent Landorus counter is Weavile. This Ice and Dark dude takes twice the damage from Rock and four times the damage from Fighting, but is thankfully very affordable. His first stage, Sneasal, is very common and has appeared in events, so chances are you have at least a couple to cast Landorus. If you’re going to bring Weavile into the fight, you’ll want them to meet Ice Shard and Avalanche.
Jynx
Source: The Pokémon Company
Jynx will work well against Landorus. As a Psychic and Ice-type, it is weak against Rock-type moves, but can handle all of Landorus’s other moves well. It is also a Gen I Pokémon that has been available at events and its baby form, Smoochum, has been available in Eggs often, so chances are you have more than enough candy to power it up. You’ll want your Jynx to know about Frost Breath and Avalanche.
Glaceon
Source: The Pokémon Company
The Eeveelution ice-type, Glaceon is a great counter to Landorus. Although Glaceon can only evolve with a glacial decoy mod, given the abundance of Eevee, as well as having appeared in various days and community events, chances are you have more than enough candy to fully power up this Pokémon. Glaceon takes double the damage from Rock and Fighting-type moves and does not bring any notable resistances to this fight. You want your Glaceon to know about Frost Breath and Avalanche.
Mega Blastoise
Source: The Pokémon Company
Gen I Blastoise Mega Evolution, Mega Blastoise works well against Landorus. As a pure water type, it doesn’t resist any of Landorus’s attacks, but it’s also not weak against any of them, and the stat boosts it gets from Mega Evolution mean it will last a long time. If you’re going to bring Blastoise to this fight, you’ll want him to meet Water Gun and Ice Beam.
Articuno
Source: The Pokémon Company
Articuno, one of Kanto’s legendary birds, performs well against Landorus. As an Ice-type and Flying, it resists Ground-type attacks, but takes quadruple damage from Rock. Although it’s a Legendary, Articuno has appeared in raids, events, and even as a Legendary Shadow Pokémon on Giovanni’s roster, so most players already have at least one pair powered up. Frost Breath and Ice Beam are the ideal move set for Articuno in this fight.
Kyogre
Source: The Pokémon Company
Pokémon Sapphire’s legendary pet Kyogre is a great choice for this raid. As a Pure Water type, it does not bring any notable strengths or weaknesses to the fight. Kyogre has been available multiple times in raids and as a research reward, so most players have at least one or two on their roster. If you bring Kyogre with you, you’ll want Waterfall for fast move and Blizzard for charged move.
Backups?
While most players will be able to team up with the best counters, if you find a niche on your team, there are plenty of backups that work well in larger groups. Just make sure you dodge and any of the following could be a decent backup:
Mr.Rime con Ice Shard y Ice Punch Alolan Ninetales con Powder Snow y Weather Ball Mew con Frost Breath y Ice Beam Mega Gyarados con Waterfall e Hydro Pump Beartic con Powder Snow y Ice Punch Walrein con Frost Breath y Blizzard Abomasnow con Powder Snow y Weather Ball Regice con Frost Breath y Blizzard Lapras con Frost Breath y Ice Beam Porygon-Z con Lock-On y Blizzard Piloswine con Ice Shard y Avalanche Cloyster con Frost Breath y Avalanche Swampert con Water Gun e Hydro Cannon
Shadow Pokémon
The rebalancing of rescued Shadow Pokémon from Team GO Rocket makes them excellent crystal cannons. Not only are his stats improved, but during special events or with EliteTM, it is possible to change his movements. If you have any of the following Pokémon with the correct move set, they will work very well in this raid:
Shadow Mamoswine con Powder Snow y Avalanche Shadow Mewtwo con Psycho Cut y Ice Beam Shadow Weavile con Ice Shard y Avalanche Shadow Articuno con Frost Breath y Ice Beam Shadow Abomasnow con Powder Snow y Weather Ball Shadow Porygon-Z con Lock-On y Blizzard Shadow Piloswine con Ice Shard y Avalanche Shadow Cloyster con Frost Breath y Avalanche Shadow Lapras con Frost Breath y Ice Beam Shadow Swampert con Water Gun e Hydro Cannon Shadow Walrein con Frost Breath y Blizzard Shadow Gyarados con Waterfall e Hydro Pump
Note: Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Mewtwo outperform every other Pokémon on the best counters list, including Mega Abomasnow. Shadow Weavile, Shadow Articuno, Shadow Abomasnow, Shadow Porygon-Z, Shadow Piloswine, Shadow Cloyster, and Shadow Lapras also perform on par with the other top counters.
How many players does it take to beat Landorus in Pokémon Go?
Under the best conditions, it is possible for two Trainers to beat Landorus. However, if you have a lower level or don’t have the best counters, you may want four or more.
Weather conditions that may affect this foray include:
Sunny / clear weather will drive Landorus’ Earth-type movements. The wind will propel Landorus’s Dragon-type move. Partly cloudy weather will boost Landorus’ Rock-type moves. Overcast weather will boost Landorus’ Fighting-type move. Snow will increase your ice type counters. Rain will increase your water type counters.
