Lando Norris takes pole position at Italian GP; ‘Checo’ will start eighth

Monza. McLaren’s British driver Lando Norris will start from the pole position after achieving the best time in qualifying for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix this Saturday at the Monza circuit, where the world championship leader, Dutchman Max Verstappen, was only seventh.

Norris will be joined on the front row of the grid by his McLaren teammate, Australian Oscar Piastri, while behind him will be British driver George Russell (Mercedes) and Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc (Ferrari).

After his victory in the last Grand Prix, at Verstappen’s home, this pole confirms that Norris and McLaren are the rivals to beat at this point in the season and that the title is not decided in favour of the Dutchman and Red Bull, despite the advantage of Mad Max remains outstanding (295 points compared to 225 before the Italian GP).

Verstappen, accompanied by his Mexican teammate Sergio Pérez, will start from the fourth row of the grid after only achieving the seventh best time, almost seven-tenths of a second behind his great rival for the World Championship.

Ahead of the two Red Bulls will be the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (fifth with Ferrari) and the British Lewis Hamilton (sixth with Mercedes).

The other Spaniard on the grid, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), was left out of Q3 and will start from eleventh place on the grid.

The young Argentinian Franco Colapinto, who at 21 years old makes his debut this weekend with Williams, went off the track and ended up in the gravel run-off area in Q1, which prevented him from getting a better time and fighting to get into the Top 10 as his Thai teammate Alex Albon (ninth) did.
