The Japanese Grand Prix will go down as a memorable race for the McLaren team, albeit with a bittersweet edge as they were not in contention for victory. The team’s performance was also special for a reason other than the double podium: Lando Norris broke the record for most points scored without a single victory.
Norris’s achievement is all the more striking given that he has competed in just 98 races, compared to his former record-setting counterpart Nico Hülkenberg, who has competed in a whopping 197 races. Norris has now amassed 543 points, which puts him above Hulkenberg, who retains his record for most races without a podium finish.
Since his debut in 2019, Lando Norris has showcased his talent for McLaren, with his recent second place at the Japanese circuit marking his tenth podium finish. Although he has yet to achieve the coveted victory, it should be noted that the record for most podium finishes without a win is currently held by Nick Heidfeld, who has stood on the podium a whopping thirteen times without ever climbing the top step.
Podium spot for rookie Piastri
However, the Japanese Grand Prix not only highlighted Norris’s story, but also that of young Australian Oscar Piastri. In his debut season in Formula 1, Piastri received his very first Grand Prix trophy. This makes him the sixth Australian driver to ever stand on a Grand Prix podium, an impressive achievement considering the illustrious company of compatriots such as his Mark Webber, AlphaTauri’s Daniel Ricciardo, and world champions Jack Brabham and Alan Jones.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that only eight other rookies in this millennium have achieved podium finishes in their debut season. Furthermore, only ten drivers in Formula 1 history achieved their first podium finish faster than Piastri, who did so in just 16 attempts. It’s interesting to note that the last driver to achieve similar feats was Lance Stroll, when he made his F1 debut for Williams in 2017 and finished third in that year’s crazy Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
