Landlord Ordered to Pay €13,000 Compensation to Pregnant Mother after Eviction Attempt

In shocking news out of Ireland, a landlord has been ordered to pay €13,000 to a pregnant mother whom he tried to evict. This case highlights the urgent need for stronger tenant protections, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women. BreakingNews.ie has more on this story.

The Workplace Relations Committee has ruled that a landlord must pay €13,000 in compensation to a pregnant mother he tried to evict only 13 days after she applied for Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). Adjudicator Bríd Deering stated that the payout, to be made by John Corley, reflects the gravity of the discrimination suffered by Laura Keane. Keane’s relationship with Corley had been positive until she requested a written lease and sought HAP. Corley reportedly reacted negatively and aggressively when Keane contacted him, claiming that he did not want HAP in his property. Keane believes that Corley served her with a Notice of Termination as a direct result of her request for HAP. Corley has also reportedly refused to complete section B of the HAP Application Form, which has prevented Keane from participating in the HAP Scheme, placing financial and emotional strain upon her and her family.

In a victory for tenant’s rights, a landlord has been ordered to pay €13,000 to a pregnant mother he tried to evict. This serves as a warning to other landlords who may consider taking advantage of vulnerable tenants. Pregnant women, in particular, are entitled to legal protections and should not be subjected to housing insecurity during this critical time. This ruling is a reminder that everyone deserves a safe and secure home, and landlords who fail to provide this may face consequences. It is important for tenants to know their rights and seek legal advice if they feel they are being mistreated or unfairly evicted. Let this be a step towards a more just and equitable housing system.
