On Tuesday, July 20, President Alejandro Giammattei announced that students from all higher education institutions in Guatemala will be able to access the vaccine. Up to this point, the Rafael Landívar University (URL) has not spoken in response to this announcement and in the last hours it was known by the Landivarian community that, supposedly, students who have not yet paid their tuition will not be able to receive immunization.

Since the university has not issued an official statement answering these doubts, La Hora contacted the Department of Social Communication of the URL, who clarified that there is a misunderstanding regarding vaccination and payment for courses; They assured that there is no relationship between the two.

“There is a confusion with the allocation process, since in this process, the boys must be up to date on their fees and their balances. This does not affect the vaccination process at all, ”explained the unit.

Additionally, they assured that the vaccination will be applied to active students, that is, those who have paid the tuition for the first cycle or this: “The University will vaccinate all active students, which are those who have paid tuition, either at the beginning of the year or for this cycle ”.

They reiterated that the subject of course registration is very different from the subject of vaccination, since “we are taking into account active students.”

WHO CLOSED THE CYCLE AND HAVE NOT GRADUATED WILL BE ABLE TO GET VACCINATED?

It was also asked whether those who already closed the pen in the previous cycle and have not yet graduated will be able to access vaccination, to which they answered: “Yes, since they are active to pay tuition in the first cycle.”

AND WHO STILL HAS PAYMENTS PENDING WITH THE UNIVERSITY?

For this question they also answered that there is the possibility of receiving the vaccine. “There is no problem that they have a balance, since they, for example, paid tuition in the first semester of this year, they count or participate in the vaccination process,” said Communication from the URL; “Even having a balance with the university because they are two different processes,” he remarked.

IN THE LACK OF PRONOUNCEMENT, STUDENTS EXPRESS THEMSELVES

Although the information was confirmed by La Hora, the house of higher studies has not publicly responded to the doubts of the student body, for this reason this day the word “universities” remained in trend on Twitter, with comments from students, graduates and general population questioning the URL.

On the other hand, the student and journalist Jovanna García wrote a series of tweets explaining the issue of daily payments; In the last two tweets, he indicated that the university has not yet reported on the official requirements, however, he invited the URL to make decisions with social responsibility. “The URL has not yet reported on the requirements officially and hopefully they can consider, before doing so, that they are being given more than power, social responsibility,” said the student.

After mentioning that vaccines are a right and almost all have been donated by other countries, he added that “if the interest is to“ love and serve ”and reduce serious infections, vaccinate everyone who has a card and that’s it! Vaccinate the people you can ”.

PDH SE PRONUNCIA

In addition, the attorney for Human Rights, Jordán Rodas, from his personal account reacted to the comments on social networks and recalled that the vaccine is a health right.

“Access to vaccines is a right of all people without distinction, which is restricted by requiring students from Private Universities to be up to date with their payments. Health is not conditioned, it is guaranteed! ”, Declared the magistrate of conscience.
