Xavi has praised Lamine Yamal after he became the youngest goalscorer in their history LaLiga became.
Just 87 days after his 16th birthday, Yamal scored FC Barcelona’s first of two goals in a 2-2 draw against Granada on Sunday. In doing so, he became the youngest goalscorer in La Liga and the fifth 16-year-old to score in the competition.
Yamal took over the record from Fabrice Olinga, who was 16 years and 98 days old when he scored for Málaga in the opening game of the 2012/13 season.
“I’m really happy about this historic goal from Lamine, he was very good today,” said Xavi after the game.
“They gave me confidence when I was 17 or 18 years old. When we see a footballer like that, we have to use him. It’s a shame his goal didn’t help us win, but I think he made a difference.” Xabi continued to praise his protégé.
Yamal himself was pleased to have made history but admitted he would have preferred his team to take all three points.
“I am very happy, it is an honor for me to be the youngest goalscorer in La Liga and for Barça,” he said. “At that moment I was thinking more about the comeback than about the goal and the record, but yes, I am very happy.”
Yamal suffered a blow during the game and had to be substituted. During the international break he was seen limping on his way to the Spanish national team.
